Struggling with LaTeX citations in Overleaf using AI copilots

I am currently writing my final thesis in Overleaf and have been trying to use AI assistants to help manage my bibliography. Most of my sources are from JSTOR and IEEE Xplore, which makes the metadata extraction a bit messy. I noticed that even when I feed a clean DOI or a full citation string into an LLM-based plugin, it often hallucinates the author names or misformats the year and volume numbers, especially for older journals that use non-standard pagination. What really frustrates me is that when I correct one entry, the AI tends to break the formatting of other entries in the .bib file if I ask it to 'fix the style.' I am using the BibTeX standard, not BibLaTeX, because my university template is old and finicky about compatibility. I have tried using Zotero to export the .bib file and then feeding that to the AI for reformatting, but the AI keeps adding unnecessary fields like 'url' or 'doi' that my strict .bst file rejects, causing compilation errors. Has anyone found a reliable workflow for maintaining a clean .bib file while using AI for draft writing? I am considering writing a custom Python script to sanitize the AI output before it hits Overleaf, but I am not sure if that is overkill. I would appreciate any advice on how to keep the citation integrity intact without manually checking every single entry in a 40-page bibliography. It is becoming such a time sink that it is detracting from the actual analysis sections of the paper.
